Folliculitis er en almindelig hudlidelse, hvor hårsækkene bliver inficerede eller betændte, hvilket resulterer i pustler eller røde knopper på huden. Det er ofte forårsaget af bakteriel infektion i hårsækkene, men kan også udløses af svampe, vira eller ikke-infektiøse faktorer.

Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis er en hudlidelse, der ligner acne, men som faktisk er forårsaget af en svamp. Det er ofte forvekslet med almindelig acne. Selvom det ligner acne, kan sædvanlige acnebehandlinger måske ikke helt klare det, og det kan vare i årevis. Denne tilstand opstår, når visse gær i vores hud vokser for meget. Although often associated with common acne, this condition may persist for years without complete resolution with typical acne medications. Malassezia folliculitis results from overgrowth of yeast present in the normal cutaneous flora. Eruptions may be associated with conditions altering this flora, such as immunosuppression and antibiotic use. The most common presentation is monomorphic papules and pustules, often on the chest, back, posterior arms, and face. Oral antifungals are the most effective treatment and result in rapid improvement. The association with acne vulgaris may require combinations of both antifungal and acne medications.

De fleste simple tilfælde løses af sig selv, men førstelinjebehandlinger er typisk aktuelle salver. Aktuelle antibiotika, såsom mupirocin eller neomycin/polymyxin B/bacitracin salve kan ordineres. Orale antibiotika kan også bruges. Svampefolliculitis (pityrosporum folliculitis) kan kræve et oralt svampedræbende middel.
○ Behandling
Al medicin til behandling af acne hjælper også med folliculitis. Benzoylperoxid og azelainsyre hjælper med at behandle folliculitis læsioner. OTC antibiotisk salve kan også bruges i nogle suppurative tilfælde.
