Unter dem Mikroskop ähnelt Keratoakanthom (Keratoacanthoma) sehr stark einem Plattenepithelkarzinom. Während einige Pathologen Keratoakanthom (Keratoacanthoma) als eigenständige Entität und nicht als bösartige Erkrankung einstufen, entwickeln sich etwa 6 % der klinisch und histologisch diagnostizierten Keratoakanthome (Keratoacanthoma) zu invasiven und aggressiven Plattenepithelkarzinomen.
