おできは、毛包の周囲にできるでこぼこした赤い膿が詰まったしこりで、柔らかく、温かく、痛みを伴います。膿が排出される準備が整うと、しこりの中心に黄色または白色の点が見られます。重度の感染では、発熱、リンパ節の腫れ、倦怠感が起こることがあります。
おできは、臀部や肛門付近、背中、首、胸、腕や脚、さらには外耳道にも現れることがあります。ものもらいと呼ばれるおできが目の周囲にできることもあります。
家庭での対処として、感染が拡大しないよう、絞ったり切ったりしないでください。大きなおできや再発するおでき、または敏感な部位（鼠径部、胸、脇の下、鼻孔の周囲や内部、耳の中など）にできた場合は、抗生物質による治療が推奨されることがあります。
