헤르페스 손끝염 (herpetic whitlow)은 HSV‑1 또는 HSV‑2 감염으로 발생할 수 있습니다. HSV‑1 감염은 주로 바이러스에 노출된 의료 종사자에게서 전파되며, 구강 분비물에 노출된 치과·의료 종사자에게 흔합니다. 또한 HSV‑1 구강 감염이 있는 어린이가 엄지손가락을 빨거나, HSV‑2에 감염된 20~30세 성인이 생식기와 접촉한 경우에도 자주 관찰됩니다.
