癤子是毛囊周圍呈凹凸不平、紅色且充滿膿液的腫塊，伴有觸痛、發熱與疼痛。當膿液即將或已排出時，腫塊中心常可見黃色或白色點。嚴重感染時，患者可能出現發燒、淋巴結腫大、疲勞等症狀。
癤子可發生於臀部或肛門附近、背部、頸部、腹部、胸部、手臂或腿部，甚至耳道內。眼周的癤子稱為麥粒腫。
不應在家自行擠壓或切割，因為可能加重感染並擴散。對於大面積、反覆發作或位於敏感部位（如腹股溝、乳房、腋窩、鼻孔周圍或內部、耳道內）的疖，醫師可能會建議使用抗生素治療。
